WE STARTED THIS PROJECT BECAUSE
KNOWING SOMETHING ISN’T THE SAME AS FEELING SOMETHING.
A BIT ABOUT THE PROJECT

To Keep a Promise seeks to show the universal story of maternal and child health. Using from footage from over a dozen countries, the film attempts to convey the complexities and interventions that lead to successes in maternal and child health. The short video follows the path to health, independence, and prosperity through one universal ‘character,’ compiled of women and children around the globe.

The film deliberately strays away from the numbers and academic studies and instead focuses on the quiet, anxious, loving, fearful, or endearing moments of women and children around the globe. The shots are intentionally unvarnished, sometimes raw, and give viewers a sense of peering into the lives of families around the globe.

WHO WE ARE

We are a group of global citizens seeking to show the world what progress in global child and maternal health looks like. Although this effort is coordinated by the Visual Epidemiology Project, we have sought collaboration among numerous NGOs, researchers, physicians, private citizens, agencies, and others to share this global story of success and the challenges that remain. You can watch Project Director Jonathan Smith speak about the project in the accompanying video to the left.

SUCCESS SHOULD BE MEASURED BY MORE THAN NUMBERS

Generating data and establishing reliable estimates is enormously important, and continued efforts to support the critical task of surveillance and epidemiology should be continued. Numbers, however, by their very nature force us to view successes and failures in global health as mere fluctuations in data.

But every number has a story. These numbers are earned.

The global community made a promise to women and children around the world to ensure health and independence. We will only be able to keep this promise if we remind ourselves and others that the incredible successes in maternal and child health are fought and paid for by human effort across all spectrums. The purpose of this project is to share the story of how these successes were formed.
